Werner Mantz - The Perfect Eye (Hardcover): Frits Giertzberg, Stijn Huijts, Huub Smeets Werner Mantz - The Perfect Eye (Hardcover)
Frits Giertzberg, Stijn Huijts, Huub Smeets
R1,401 Discovery Miles 14 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Werner Mantz (1901-1983) was a prominent architectural and industrial photographer who began his career in the 1920s. His work occupies a unique historical position thanks to his visual language, technical prowess and use of natural light. As one of the most important photographers of the New Building movement, Mantz's oeuvre bridges the gap between the often-anonymous nature of commissioned photography and the modernist , artistic avant-garde movements of the interwar years, such as the Bauhaus. In the 1970s, Mantz was even hailed as the 'missing link' in the history of international photography. To date, only thematic selections from Mantz's wide-ranging oeuvre have been exhibited. This monograph sets the record straight by showcasing, for the very first time, his immense versatility. Werner Mantz - The Perfect Eye contains over 300 predominantly vintage images, ranging from architectural photography, advertising shots and portraits of adults and children, to views of industry and mines, religious subjects, shops, restaurants and interiors, as well as roads, public spaces, landscapes and travel photographs. That Mantz's oeuvre belongs to the canon of international photography is indisputable. With text contributions by Frits Gierstberg, Stijn Huijts, Huub Smeets, Charlotte Mantz and Clement Mantz. Werner Mantz - The Perfect Eye is the publication accompanying the retrospective exhibition of Werner Mantz at the Bonnefanten in Maastricht from 25 September 2022 to 26 February 2023.

Berlinde De Bruyckere: Angel's Throat (Hardcover): Stijn Huijts, Erwin Mortier, Zbigniew Herbert Berlinde De Bruyckere: Angel's Throat (Hardcover)
Stijn Huijts, Erwin Mortier, Zbigniew Herbert
R1,359 Discovery Miles 13 590 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A comprehensive overview of renowned Belgian artist Berlinde De Bruyckere's work since 2014, inspired by the figure of the angel Belgian artist Berlinde De Bruyckere has long been a leading light in the international contemporary art world whose sculptures, installations and drawings endeavor to find the meaning of humanity, physicality, suffering and vitality. Conceived in the loneliness and isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic, this book explores De Bruyckere's recent, never-before-seen work inspired by the figure of the angel as portrayed in myths, stories, literature and art history. According to De Bruyckere, an angel-with its warm, dark wings-provides protection, a refuge from fear. The angel guards against a lonely existence and, even more importantly, against a lonely death. It symbolizes the fragile line De Bruyckere treads between artistic poeticism and engagement with current affairs. This volume will serve as an essential resource on an artist whose works constitute a provocative and influential addition to the contemporary art canon. Distributed for Mercatorfonds Exhibition Schedule: Bonnefantenmuseum Maastrich, The Netherlands (March 29-September 26, 2021)

David Lynch - Someone Is in My House (Paperback): Stijn Huijts David Lynch - Someone Is in My House (Paperback)
Stijn Huijts; Contributions by Kristine McKenna, Michael Chabon, Petra Giloy-Hirt
R865 Discovery Miles 8 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

David Lynch has always been in the spotlight as a filmmaker, directing some of the most iconic movies ever made, but as a visual artist, he is less widely known. Lynch delights in the physicality of painting and likes to stimulate all the senses in his work. This new paperback edition brings together Lynch’s paintings, photography, drawings, sculpture and installation, and stills from his films. Many of these works reveal the dark underpinnings behind Lynch’s often-macabre movies. Others explore his fascination with texture and collage. Throughout, Lynch’s characteristic style—surreal, stylish, and even humorous—shines through. An introduction by music journalist and Lynch biographer Kristine McKenna, along with a thought- provoking essay by curator Stijn Huijts, offers fascinating new information and perspectives on Lynch’s life and career. This book reveals an unexplored facet of Lynch’s oeuvre and affirms that he is as brilliant a visual artist as he is a filmmaker.

Marta & Slava - Selected projects 2009 - 2020 (Paperback): Marta Volkova, Slava Shevelenko Marta & Slava - Selected projects 2009 - 2020 (Paperback)
Marta Volkova, Slava Shevelenko; Text written by Guus Beumer, Stijn Huijts, Floor Luijk, …
R839 Discovery Miles 8 390 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Marta Volkova (*1955) and Slava Shevelenko (*1953) were born in the Soviet Union, that distant country which seems to exist only in history books and all their work seems to stem from this legendary beginning. In the era of fabulators, perverse mechanics of alternative facts and ill-intentioned fake news forgers, Volkova and Shevelenko are like story tellers: their work is expressed in vast narrative installations. Their rich, multifaceted projects explore the boundaries between reality and fiction. Using subjects from the collective mythology - the Yeti, the so-called Tunguska meteorite in Siberia - they interweave these with moral, social, philosophical or political metaphors which in turn resonate with the realities of today's world. In this publication a number of selected projects are presented, made by Volkova and Shevelenko between 2009 and 2020.
